The plaque commemorates the first Australian Beaufighter squadron to serve in World War Two.

The squadron was formed in 1942, flying Beaufighter aircraft on long range attacks against Japanese troops in Papau New Guinea. The squadron also took part in the Battle of the Bismarck Sea in 1943, and was based in Canberra for a time before being disbanded in 1963.
