Presbyterian Church Roll of HonourPrint Page Print this page

The framed illuminated honour roll commemorates those from the church who served in Wold War One.

Last Sunday week in the Presbyterian parish of Port Macquaric (Rev. G. M.Torbett. M.A., minister), there were unveiled three rolls of honour, one at Huntingdon, by Mrs. Wisely, another at Wauchope by Mrs. Wade, and a third at Port Macquarie by Mrs. Dennis. After the unveiling of the rolls, the minister read the names of the young men connected with the congregation who had enlisted. They were justly proud of these young men, and their country, too, was proud of them. Lord Kitchener, in a recruiting speech, had said: "It is not for me to tell you your duty. Be honest with yourself. Be certain that your so-called reason is not a selfish excuse." These young men had not put forward any selfish excuse they had gone in response to the call of duty. At a time when the nation was giving of its best to suffer and die, they as parents had given of their best. It had cost them much, but as one mother once remarked to them she would rather that her son should go than that he should shirk his duty. He trusted that God would bless the parents and their brave sons, and in His mercy spare them to return to them safe and well. It is worthy of note that in the 29 names there are only 16 surnames, indicating the sacrifices many families are making follows: — Huntingdon — Graham (2), Wisely (2), Colwoll (2): Wauchope -Wade (2), Pead (2), Andrews (2), Steele (2), Avis and Dark: Port Macquarie: — Davidison (3), Dennis (4), Ramsay(3), Bankier, Campell McLean and Stewart.
